Review: Timesurfers by Rhonda Sermon

Back to the Future meets The Mortal Instruments in this thrilling new fantasy series.
"It's not a choice. It's a destiny."

When I first heard of Timesurfers I had no clue what it was about or what to expect.  It had popped up in my instagram out of the blue on day and I was interested when Rhonda contacted me.  I am glad I gave this book a shot though because it was a wonderful fast paced read full of hot boys, bad-ass time travel and a million twists and turns.  I never once had to put this book down and it held me attention all the way through and left me wanting more!

Being a book about time travel my inner sci-fi nerd was very excited.  From Doctor Who to Back to the Future I love a bit of good sci-fi.  I honestly expected your run-of-the-mill girl gets picked up by cute guy who takes her to the future and they fall in love and while yes, Cate, the main character, is picked up by a couple of cute guys who take her time travelling, it is a whole lot more.  There is so much going on in this book that, while normally I get bored in novels that require a lot of explaining, I welcomed the conversations between characters that helped me learn about the mysterious 'Timesurfers'. I often found myself a little confused about the mixture of magic and technology that is explored in the book but in a way it made me relate to Cate more as whenever I was confused she was too and there was always an explanation somewhere.  Rhonda has used this first novel to explain her world and has done it exceptionally.

Apart from building an interesting and exciting world, Rhonda has also created complex and strangely relatable characters.  Cate is the main character of the book and is a teenage girl in witness protection who is just trying to live through high school fairly unnoticed.  This turns out to be more difficult than expected after she runs into the timesurfers and her timeline starts changing right before her eyes. She is a confident young woman with tae kwon do skills and an attitude.  She doesn't just go with the flow when her world gets turned upside down and instead of following the lead of those who come in to 'take control of the situation' tries to find answers for herself. Her normal teenage attributes mixed in with her bravery and loyalty made me relate to her and admire her at the same time.  Her interactions with other characters ranged from hilarious to nail biting and kept me interested and reading.

Jonah, Austin, Rafe and Rose were just a few of the powerful time travelling group called timesurfers.  Each of them were written to be so unique and interesting and I found myself feeling as if I knew them.  Out of them all my favourite character is, despite the beauty of both Jonah and Austin, Rose.  I can't say too much about her because her life is plot twist after plot twist but Rhonda's description of  a bad ass chick who doesn't take any bull from anyone made me love her, even if she had a hate-hate relationship with Cate.  Jonah and Austin are both beautiful yet different boys who I had the pleasure of reading about.  If you enjoy shipping as much as I do you will definitely enjoy this story.  Jonah is more of the brooding bad boy while Austin is the fun loving teen.  Even after finishing the book I can't decide whose crooked smile I love more.

Timesurfers is a wonderful story full of plot twist after plot twist and amazing characters.  Rhonda's writing skills bring everything you could hope for to the table with just the right amount of thrilling action, game changing plot twists and hilarious encounters.  While this new world was a little confusing for me to take in in one book I did enjoy every minute I had my nose buried in the electronic pages.

I received an electronic copy of the book from the author in exchange for an honest review
